Health Care
Health care is provided by the government and private practioners. All residents must have health insurance, and half is usually covered by the employer.
First-class medical services are available on Grand Cayman with two fully-equipped hospitals, numerous clinics and many private specialist doctors and general practitioners. We also attract a wealth of visiting specialists and subspecialists. As healthcare and medications are quite costly, it is advised that you secure your health insurance immediately, as health insurance coverage is mandatory on the Island.
In addition to a wide array of medical services and procedures available on-Island, it is also possible to have advanced radiology, CTs, and 3D-ultrasound, echocardiography, GI endoscopy, cystoscopy, chemotherapy, hospice and in-home nursing. Pharmacies are well-stocked and the staff knowledgeable. The two largest supermarkets, Kirk Supermarket and Fosters Food Fair, also have pharmacies on their premises that are open 12 hours a day.
Note: Not everywhere in Cayman is wheelchair accessible. Few doctors are willing to do house calls and if you have a pre-existing condition it would be wise to bring your doctor's medical records with you.
There are no endemic tropical diseases, and there is no malaria on the Cayman Islands.

Medical Insurance
Health insurance is required by law. The law provides that employers must take out insurance for their employees and the cost of payment can be split 50/50. The average cost of health insurance depends on the terms of your employment and the particular insurance company. Plans vary from basic to all-inclusive, which cover prescriptions, dental, optical and most outpatient services. The cost also varies with age and whether you have pre-existing conditions.
Medical and dental practitioners are obligated by law to accept local insurance 'on assignment' once the deductible has been met. This means that they will claim directly to the insurance company for work done on your behalf. Please be aware that all the charges may not be paid by the insurance company as some private practice fees may exceed the 'Reasonable and Customary Fees'. You are advised to always confirm with the medical office or individual practitioner the cost of the impending treatment. For large items it is not unreasonable to ask for a written quote.
